Hi. I got a 2008 Cobalt Sport 2.4 l with a 5 speed manual tranny. The upgrades so far have been: 1) K&N air intake; 2) GM performance exhaust; 3) Turbonator thingie in the air intake. I've joined the forum to see what else i can do to increase power and acceleration. The next projects are installing a performance air sensor and either buying a chip upgrade (JET) or dyno tuning the ECM. I also own a heavy highway truck (2004 International 9400 with a 15 l CAT) and after I did a Performance Dyno the engine feels totally different - the truck now makes 550 HP and 1900 lb-ft of torque at 1425 RPM! I've tried to find a dyno shop that can tune my Cobalt's ECM but have not had much luck so far... :( I'm in Ontario, Canada.

Well welcome to the site! start off by pulling out that turbonator.. All its doing is restriction air flow. Don't waste your time with the jet chip. the only convenience is you can take it off when you want to. Look into trifecta tuning. They send you a basic tune (depending on your mods) that you download into your car. then you drive around with it connected to your car and it basically data logs how your car is running and they can then send you a better tune. This is just as effective as dyno tuning. I have't gotten this tune yet, but many cobalt owners are very happy with this way of tuning!

OUCH..you were a little harsh there Daman...LoL.

Waste your time with a Jet Module? The Jet Modules provide some measured increase in performance, you can take it off when you want to, possibly resell it if you need to -- so it's not a bad item for the average owner.

The trifecta tunes appear to be good -- I don't know of anybody getting one personaly either so I can't give any feedback other than what some posters have provided. My opinion on getting a tune, that you insert into your ECM, is that you run the risk of throwing away your warranty because a good technician can find the tune and get your warranty voided. Additionally, if your cobalt needs to be taken to the dealer for work it is possible that the technician can upload new data into your ECM (just a normal upgrade pushed into the field, for example) that would overwrite your "tune".

Until I see a comparison that proves one is absolutely better than the other I'll stick to the "EASY" one...LoL!

To the OP, there is also the MRZ underdrive pulley (UDP) that slows your alternator and AC compressor by ~10% (need a 1" shorter belt that they also provide).

a jet chip cant change and control everything a tune can and will not free up anywhere near what a tune will. and for right around the same price, why not get more for your money

Thanks for the tip. That's the kind of information I was looking for. Do you guys think it's worth it to replace the stock mass air sensor with a "performance" air sensor. i saw it on the web for around $175...

Well I don't really know what a performance sensor would do.. People have turbo'd there balt still using there stock MAF so i doubt it really does much good.

I disagree with you on this. The Jet Performance module is not a "CHIP" but a mini-computer that has parameters set in it that change the fuel and timing depending on preset parameters -- just like a "tune". I am enjoying my Jet Performance Stage 1 module and have no need for a tune.
I had experience with Jet Performance proms back on the GNs and T-types in 87. I can assure you those that had the Jet Performance proms ran MUCH faster then the stock prom owners.
Part of the problem is that Jet's real name is Jet Chip Performance and everybody wants to say "CHIP" when referring to this performance upgrade. If you break open the Jet module you will not just find a resister or resistors (that is what you buy on e-bay) -- it is a black rectangular computer module...just like you find in your PC.
I do not want to argue against a tune like Trifecta's, I just want people to understand that the Jet Performance Module is an effective alternative for their car. I have read some posts where people that got a tune dynoed their car and got an additional 7 HP -- that would be hard to feel with your butt-dyno...

about the MAF sensor a performance sensor isn't really more sensitive how ever the the stock MAF will restrict airflow unless your runing the track there would be no point in replacing this as far as i can tell. we are talking a small increase in performance.

Well, in my experience these gadgets do work - it's like a passive turbo charger. After I installed 2 Turbonators in my air intake, acceleration has improved but I haven't seen any fuel mileage increases. Then I found out that Turbonator is not the only or first company that makes these rings. "Vortec Cyclone" is the original. I ordered one Cyclone, and installed it today instead of the 2 Turbonators I had before. It works! 1 Cyclone creates the same effect as 2 Turbonators because the Cyclone is better designed. Check out this picture: Vortec Cyclone is on the left and Turbonator is on the right. Note the difference in the shape of the petals. With the Cyclone I also noticed a slight improvement in fuel mileage for city driving (based on ECM data).

The turbonator may help slightly for around town driving, But at WOT that hunk of metal is a restriction and slowing down air flow any way you look at it.
