So you've got a SS style front end on your Cobalt that didn't come with OEM fogs. You get, or make, a harness and get OEM style lamps, but the fogs only come on with the park lights or headlights. I guess that's just the way it is... WRONG! You too can have fog lamps that are under your control! All you need is:
Materials:
- One 12 volt, 10 amp switch (assuming you're using 55 watt bulbs)
- 14 gauge wire
- 22 gauge wire (if the switch is illuminated)
- Two blue splice crimps, One blue ring crimp, Two blue "fast/push on" crimps. (I recommend the use of "fast on" style crimps for easy removal if necessary. I didn't use them due to a brain fart.)
- Shrink Sleeving or electrical tape
- "Add a fuse" wire
Tools:
- Crimper
- Wire stripper
- Cutters
- Solder and soldering iron
- Heat gun or match for shrink sleeve

Okay hopefully I didn't forget anything :embarrest:

Here we go... Begin by disconnecting your battery. Then decide where you would like your switch located. I chose to put it in approximately the OEM location. Mark the point to drill. Since my switch was large (about 3/4 inch) I made a pilot hole with a smaller bit then proceeded to finish the hole. (WARNING: The bit may, and probably will, grab the piece you are drilling so be aware.) Once you have the whole drilled clean it up with a file, and make sure the switch fits snugly.

Next, run the positive (+) wire from the fogs threw the firewall using the grommet under the dash; you will probably need to splice more wire to allow it to reach. (Negative (-) should be grounded under the hood somewhere I used a bolt on the strut)

Run the wire up through the dash to the location you chose. Cut to length, but leave slack to work with. (Remember: "It's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it..") "Tin" (put solder on) the bare end of the wire and the prong that will be used as "out"(to the bulbs) on the switch, to prepare then make the connection. (I used the prong closer to the two little ones as to facilitate connecting the positive on the LED's terminal. That way the light only receives power when the fogs are on.) Cover that connection with tape/shrink sleeve.If you choose to use "Fast ons" for the switch simply crimp the connector on the wire and attach.


If your switch is illuminated splice the small gauge wire onto the "out" wire and solder to the pos.(+) terminal for the LED,

then solder the neg.(-)

and find a ground (almost any bolt going to metal will do.)

That bolt is right inside the panel on the side of the dash.

Next, solder the larger wire to the open (Bottom in the pic) prong on the switch and cover with tape/shrink sleeve.

Run the wire to the power source of your choosing. Use a crimp to splice the "add a fuse" wire and make your connection to the power source. (I used a 20 amp fuse) I used an open slot in the fuse box that always receives power.

Hide the wires to your pleasure, reconnect battery, and enjoy.

Im curious for me wiring detail from the actual fog lights. I have an SS bumper with the fog light inserts but no bulbs. Did you make a harness or did you buy one?

I should have made them but I bought them. It's easy enough on ebay you can get H11 bulb connectors for a couple dollars then run the power to the driver side bulb. Then make a splice and connect it over to the passenger and do the same for the negative. I hope that helps. If you need I can make a quick sketch and scan it on my comp.

i need to do something like this for my traction control button. the trim i have doesn't come with the hole for it

you have a traction control button ive wanted one in my 06 but have not been able to figure out how to go about wiring one in without causing the chrime to constantly go off
