Dont mind the dirty car, its clean now

Tools Required:
Hands
Car
Automatic transmission
2.5mm Allen Key

Step 1.
Start the car.
Put it in Drive.
Pull the E-Brake

Step 2.
Grab the chrome piece at the bottom of the shifter and Twist it Counter Clock Wise WHILE pushing it down. Here is what you will get:

Step 3.
Located on the exposed brown plastic on the backside of the shifter is a screw. Get your Allen Key and unscrew it a couple of turns, you don't have to take it all the way out.

A better shot of the screw:

Step 4:
Pull it off and you now have successfully removed your automatic shift knob :D

Hopefully I won't have to explain how to put it back on........

Nice How-to. Nice of you to take the time to create it.

Have issues with step 1: start car -- you only need to turn the key to on. Shouldn't start the car to remove the knob. Change step 1 to: set parking brake, turn key to on, depress brake, move selector to "D".

lol i would of just used a grinder
The button operates the detent in the shifter assembly to move the lever out of park. Only way to get rid of the button is to find an aftermarket shifter that works with the Cobalt auto. WHich means you have to use the factory shifter and have the button.
