My wife delivers newspapers out of her 2006 cobalt. Within the last month the car has began idling rough and has started stalling on her. To make matters worse the power steering gets extremely hard to turn sometimes but seems to be related with the battery not charging because of all the stops. I have put plugs and a fuel filter on her car, trying to get an idea of where to go from here. BTW its a 2006 LS with 81000miles.

Changed the fuel filter lately?

It is difficult to provide answers through a computer without being able to look at the car. Scan for DTCs through your OBDII connector and see if there are any stored codes to help you diagnose the problem, if you can't read the codes take your car to Autozone and they can read them for you.

...Best advice I can give you over the computer...

My 05 was doing the same ideling and stalling too.... i gave the air intake a very good clean and also cleaned the MAF sensor (USE the special cleaner its like 5 bucks)... and cleaned the throlebody (again there is an especial cleaner for that also like 5bucks)... the problem with mine is that brather hose was feeding a lil of oil into the air intake

it is also time to change your battery... Batteries dnt last a life time they usually last about 3 or 4 years i maxed out one in 5years in my last car....

BTW when you clean the intake make sure you remove the MAF sensor for it is very delicate.... Very very delicate

Yeah I have put new fuel filter and plugs on last week. my mechanic hooked up his scanner and the tps reading kept jumping and moving and it had some movement before it started changing the value when he pushed the pedal. I pulled the intake off today and i was like man where did this oil come from and what can i do to stop it.

I figured it was the battery or just the nature of the beast delivering newspapers alot of low speed driving not much battery charging going on.

Yeah like i said clean all that oil off... its actually coming from the enigine trought the breather hose my car is actually doing the same thing (IDKW) I used the the Gumout Air Intake & Throttle Body Cleaner its like 5 or 10bucks.... and Again make sure you REMOVE the MAF sensor b/c if you spray with this cleaner you will damage the sensor and its $120.

Speaking of the MAF, clean it too! There is another especial cleaner for that...!! Let us know

About the oil getting trough the breather hose somebody can answer us the question here..... hmmmm .....DAMAN?

Well some people have put a breather filter on the valve cover nub when putting on aftermarket intakes, however that's not the smartest idea

Quoted from maven on CSS.net
" Negative atmosphere in the crankcase is GOOD, people strive to achieve negative pressure in the crankcase, entire systems are built just to induce a negative atmosphere in the crankcase. It reduces pumping losses, it reduces potential for seal and gasket leaks, it removes harmful vapors from the crankcase, it reduces excess oil film on the cylinder wall creating a more pure cylinder fill(no oil contaminating mixture) Most racers like to see 10-15"hg vacuum in the crankcase. . and the intake helps with this."

The oil getting in the TB is not causing a problem but can kinda gum it up through out time. If your really worried about it I'd recommend making some sort of oil catch can similar to this..

Or just buy that..

Really appreciate the help. My mechanic and myself have had a round with this one, if it will stop raining i am gonna clean the throttle body and intake. Other than this problem we love our Cobalt glad to see some people that actually help rather than poke at the newbs on a forum.

Hey all, I have cleaned my throttle body and now my car is reving to about 1700 when I start and stays there. Also, when driving at higher speed it idles at around 2700 when I clutch and stays up there for about 5-10 seconds.

I checked the vacuum hose and it seems snug.

Update, I took the filter cover off and put my finger across the mass air flow sensor and it seems to idle more normally with it partially covered.

Called the dealer and they won't do anything unless the check engine light comes on.
