when my 06 cobalt Lt. is at idle it doesn't sound right. and twice the car randomly shut off. luckily i was home when it happened. its idling around 800rpm, i think thats a little low shouldn't it be around 1k rpm. the only mods i have is a catback exhaust and air box mod. i don't think its the exhaust, but it could be.

That sounds about right. My idle on my SS was 750, and my idle w/ no AC on my evo is 700, with AC on tho it's 950 and same with my SS.

800 is a good idle. If it is just randomly dying, is it giving any CEL's?

Nominal idle speed is set 750rpm. You my friend are describing all the symptoms of a dirty throttle body. When is the last time you cleaned it?
