I apologize if these questions were answered before. I searched but I didn't really find great answers for what I'm wanting to know.

I'll be honest, I don't really know much about cars, like at all. I did a few cosmetic changes on the outside of my car but I'd really like to learn how to mod it, and I heard the intake is a good place to start. I have a 2007 LS Coupe, all stock at the moment.

My first question is, are there any advantages having a SRI over a CAI? I had a buddy describe the differences, and I'd rather double check with you guys... CAI can intake colder air than the SRI could, so my question is why would anyone use a short ram? Unless I wasn't told everything. The only thing I can think of is you need to avoid rain and puddles in fear of trashing your engine. That CAN be an issue because I live in southern US where it rains tons during the spring season, but other than that I should be ok. So I've decided on a CAI unless someone can point out a flaw with one or an advantage with a SRI I'm not aware of.

Next I need to decide on the brand. This is where I really need help because I have no idea what I'm doing. Injen? K&N? AEM? I don't know where to begin... :smile1:

sounds like youve done your research. the hydro lock issue is the main reason people go with short rams. some companies make intakes that convert from one to the other. but i cant remember who makes one for the 2.2. i want to say injen, but im not 100% on that. maybe someone will see this and fill you in. as far as which brand to go with, they all give about the same gain. so people are going to vote for what they have. which sticker do you like? :laugh:

The difference in performance between SRI and CAI Is very minimal. A SRI will give you a little more low end HP and throttle response, as well as a little more sound due to the short tubing. A true CAI will have a bit slower throttle response but will give you a little better HP at high RPMs due to the cold air.

I personally have the K&N SRI and I love it! It comes with a heat shield, so that helps with the cold air aspect. It is also CARB legal for if you live in a state that has strict emissions/mod rules

Injen is the intake that comes with both pieces.. you can make it a CAI or SRI whenever you please..

However if you do go with a SRI i would highly reccomend K&N!

Wait so a SRI is not only louder, but it gives more HP in general? You said it gave more "low end HP" but I'm not sure what that means.

It sounds like a SRI is the way to go actually. From the start I knew an intake adds maybe 10 - 15 HP but I really wanted one for the deeper sound. If they both add about equal HP, but the SRI is louder AND you don't have to worry about water; I guess a CAI isn't as good as I thought. Am I looking at this right?

actually a CAI will give a touch more HP but youll see that in your higher RPM range and you have the water issue. it gives you that little extra HP due to it getting colder air then the SRI. and it wont be as loud as an SRI. that being said The little bit more HP difference isnt enough to be noticeable

The SRI provides a touch less Hp then the CAI because its in the engine bay and is bringing in "warmer" air. it will be louder and you dont have to worry about the water issue. and what he means by "more low end Hp" means youll feel it more in your lower RPM's like throttle response and accleration instead of the top end like a CAI

that being said, i myself and like daman like the SRI and K&N brand

if you want to be interchangeable then the injen has both for the price of once. (you can take the lower tube off and run SRI or you can put it on and run CAI) your call

Thanks B-Low. I'm going with a short ram. I'd rather have a louder sounding engine and more HP in my acceleration rather than a water issue and more HP at high RPMs. Just because I'm rarely in that range because I try and take care of my car and dont race THAT much...

Did you order your intake form the K&N website? Are they trustworthy and quick shippers? Also, sorry for the all the questions but I have one more. After an intake what would be a good mod to look into next? Performance wise obviously. :)

actually i bought mine from http://ajusa.com

they usually have cheaper prices on everything that i search for. because they buy in bulk so you save money. plus its always free shipping and no sales tax if outside CA. and they offer alot of good promo discounts like right now its (spend $100 get $10 off, or $200 for $20 off, or $300 for $30 off) great deals. so youll automaticllay save another $20 on your price. great service and quick shipment.

as for your next performance mod i would highly suggest starting with your exhuast. piece by piece get a header/ gm extrude honed manifold, new down pipe, and a cat back exhaust. all of these will free up power but they will work the best when combined. so if you dont have enough to do them all at once. youll see more hp freed up by starting with a header/manifold and a down pipe, then top it off with your exhaust.

some people like to start the other way (with a catback) and then get a header/manifold and down pipe later. basically your call and what you can afford but i started from the front

an intake and full exhaust will help you out pretty good

well after checking the price on their site for you thats not where you wanna go. damn they raised their prices. i got mine for $235 shipped.

ok, i have just one quick question regarding this. does installing a SRI or CAI void the cobalt's warranty at all? thx

my 05 had an injen on it... i usually ran it short ram unless i knew the wheather was gonna be good for a bit then i'd run cold air... i also with the injen didnt have inner fender well's i dunno i dislike inner fender wells for some reason so incase of rain or i wanted to put it back on it was like a 2 second waist of my life as compared to takin it all apart... personally tho i've found the k&n to be the best reason being i ran my injen for 6 month's short ram and my k&n 6 month's short ram and over time kinda felt like the injen filter was actually gettin backed up with dirt and sluggish feeling... but the k&n has performed top notch since day 1..

keep the stock airbox and everything and put it on before warranty work..
perfect got it. im looking at the K&N Filters 69-4515TS Typhoon Air Intake System for my LS. looks like it's compatible. just need more money now, lol

I'm a little concerned with getting the K&N because of its oil filter. Are there any particular tips that you could give me to avoid over oiling it and damaging the mass air flow sensor? maybe im just worrying about it more than i should....

buy AEM dry filters and you dont need to oil them. but from what im to understand...not tooo many people have had any problems with the MAF sensor unless they just add ridiculous amounts of oil. but yeah, you could always get dry filters.

I had an AEM CAI intake on my LS and had no problems with it, threw no cels either. Good intake and performed well.

ya i did some more research and thats pretty much what i read. ill also look into those dry filters, thx
