Hi all,

I bought it new in '07 and so far I've gotten 78000 miles. It's a stick and I've really liked it; it's both stylish and practical. The only problem is, the entire front end is horrible. I wasn't gonna whine about it, but the calipers were the last straw. Here's the list of items that broke/leaked/tore:

1) Original tires went bald at 25000 miles. That's understandable, can't expect an entry-level car to have great tires. Turned me off to the tire brand, though...
2) Front rotors warped almost right off the dealer lot. Didn't want to bother with dealer hassle so I replaced them with wagner thermoquiet rotors & pads and never had a problem since.
3) Struts & shocks went bad shortly thereafter. Replaced with KYB's and enjoy a very stiff ride since then, no leakage.
4) Lower control arm bushing. By now I figured everything else OEM on the front end will fail anyway, so the entire control arm was replaced with Moog problem solvers, greased the zerks and no problems since.
5) Steering wobbled a lot, probably shaken apart by the warped rotors but who knows. Replaced the entire rack & pinion with A1cardone refurb. and the outer tie rods with new Moog problem solvers. Greased the zerks and the steering became solid again.
6) Started getting paranoid about the front end, so I replaced the swaybar links and bushings with Moog. Again greased the zerks.
7) While bleeding the front brakes and replacing the front hydraulic hoses this month (damaged during one of the many previous repairs) both of the original caliper bleeder valves tore off, flush with the caliper. Figured the calipers were probably failing so I replaced them with Raybestos remanuf. Been great so far.

I guess my advice would be to get ready for front-end repairs if you've got an LS. I still like the car, the mileage is over 40mpg on the highway. The vast majority of driving was highway, too. Glad I could vent here, thanks.

I have 3 Cobalts, so imagine my repairs. But it's all cheap stuff to replace.

Cobalt's biggest problems are the clunks and rattles and bangs from the front end.

My front end has been pretty solid since I picked up the car used in '09. Besides normal wear things like endlinks, rotors and a sagging bumper, all's well. I need to replace both wheel bearings and the caliper pins need a good greasing though. Not a big deal.

Just purchased 2 new front struts swap for the black one. 6 bolts each side and I'm done with the front noise.

I probably shouldn't post this (bad karma?) but, my '09 has 42,000 and no problems like these! No squeaks, or rattles or anything, just a bad drivers side speaker.....so far! :weird:

Why is it ALWAYS the drivers side speaker that goes first haha! I've owned my 08 for 2 years now and put 15k miles on it, only issues were blown shocks and struts and brakes needed to be changed. Slight problem with the tcm when I first got it but that was warrantied

The only front end parts I have not replaced are the drive axles, steering rack and calipers. Everything else was done over this last winter. have 71k on the car now, 6k on the new front end. Noticeable and much better difference. I replaced everything but the intermediate steering shaft and the front end was still sloppy. After changing that, it was surprising how much the front end tightened up.

We replaced everything on my old cobalt. Still a clunking sound when going over bumps.

My driver side keeps coming back to life! It will die for a bit and then come back a week or two later. About to get rid of it though because without fronts I don't have to hear door chimes or turn signal noises.
But I got my car with 70k-ish miles and its over 96k now, I have only had to replace thermostat. I have replaced the timing chain tensioner based on recommendations and a few other parts just for performance or fun.
