Hey guys my 2007 Chevy Cobalt with the 2.2 suddenly the car won't crank and it displays power steering and low fuel on the screen, no security light on or check engine light, I'm leaning towards bad tcm because it gave me problems about 3 months ago I added the extra ground and worked. Now I have noticed that if I connect my ground to the tcm I can see it spark a little bit this makes me think that the tcm is shorted. Also do used tcms need programed to the car or can it run not programed. Thanks for the help

i would try filling up on fuel first, but if it still doesnt crank there are three possible problems, the EPS isnt working and you have to replace the motors, or the tcm might be bad, you dont have to reprogram the tcm if it were to come out of another cobalt. if you needed to add another ground and you see sparks i would just replace it becuase that sounds like an accident waiting to happen. OR the fuel sensor or pump isnt functioning and your engine isnt getting enough gas, turn your key to the ACC position and you might be able to hear a humming from the fuel pump, if it makes a loud whine or something wierd you should clean out the fuel filter since it might be clogged.

Really sorry to hear about your cobalt man, I hope you get it fixed

I cleaned the pin connector I'm really leaning towards a bad tcm since it arcs when you add the extra ground wire, also a couple months ago the car got the power steering message I added a ground and it fixed it until now, I'm hopping I made the right troubleshooting by ordering a used tcm my next question is will the used one with a matching part number allow my car to run without being programed

99% sure it will run without being programed, also recomend checking the power steering thing, making the light turn off wont make the problem go away, also its electric (Depends what trim you have i think) if the steering is harder i would check that out too :)

Does the car turn on service airbag or repair airbag? mine does that too but that doesnt affect anything unless you get in a crash. Also did the car have fuel when you had it or... (Most of us forget to put fuel in these days). and what do you mean "limp mode?" like did the steering go out or did the throttle die? ect. the only way to pinpoint what happened is to plug in an OBD2 and see the code. mechanics have them and stealerships but you can buy one at harbor freight for like 120 bucks.

Umm not sure about air bag stuff, but the car ran fine drive fine it has over a quarter tank of gas. Just all of the sudden the car wouldn't start I lost my dic readouts besides odometer and it displays low fuel and power steering on the dic . And none of the gauges work. I swapped out the tcm for a used one it changed nothing if I hook a ground up to the tcm case I get very very fine Sparks I'm trying to figure out what would cause this. I'm load testing the battery tommorow at work.

i know this is a few minths old, but seems odd he would try the TCM.... TCM is for the transmission. This would have been more of an electrical issue or possibly BCM. The BCM would need to be reprogrammed witht the TECH 2 scan tool.

I would try to crank it while someone spayed some gas in the throttle body then you know you have a fuel problem
