I've got an '08 Cobalt, and up until recently, I've been doing mostly short trips and changing my oil every 5,000 km's. I use a factory filter and Castrol GTX conventional. I use the recommended spec all year (I can't remember what it is off the top of my head).

Thing is, I've recently started a new job, and I'd say 90%+ of my driving is highway.

Does anyone push their interval longer than 5k on conventional, or does everyone stick to it?

The car does have 256k on it (again, in kilometres).

I've considered switching to a synthetic oil (Mobil 1), with a factory filter, but seeing as the age of the engine and that I currently have no leaks.. I'm not sure if I should try my luck.

When I used conventional, I usually changed it at 3500-4000 miles. Would waiting a little longer hurt anything? Probably not. The important thing is to keep your oil level topped off.

If you're looking at switching over to synthetic you could always start with a blend. I switched over to mobil 1 full syn at 100K with no issues.

What's the oil life monitor say to go to?

Personally I would not worry about doing 5,000 (miles) minimum on a brand name conventional.
And you'd be wrong, most conventionnal oil lose their viscosity and start to turn to tar after 3000 miles. Synthetic is the way to go especially if you have the cam actuators. You should switch to a synthetic oil filter if you switch to Mobil 1 and still follow manufacturers directions. Change filter after 3000 miles eventhough your oil is good to 10000 miles.

Put in amsoil SS oil and you'll be good for 15k mile oil changes.

Even a synthetic blend is good for 10000 km oil changes.

Strange - I haven't seen many (any?) UOAs that show conventional oil turning to tar at around 3,000 miles (particularly 90% highway driving). Do you have some UOAs you could post or link?

This day and age of you don't run at least synthetic blend then you should think again

i have been using Mobil 1 extended performance advanced full synthetic 5w-30 since day one i bought the car and i always change it when the oil life reaches 40-35%. i also use a WIX filter change it twice(first time fresh oil 100% oil life and second at 60% oil life since it only takes a second to swap) if i remove my engine oil cap; the exposed engine is clean as Mr. Clean's bald head loll


But Mobil 1 E.P. says 15,000 miles of guaranteed protection...but im sure thats pushing it.

My 2006 Cobalt LS has 115,000 miles on it and runs like I bought it brand new. I do what Gopi Hira does, but I use conventional.

However I change my oil filter once a month, and always change my oil once every two months. I drive about 1,100 to 1,500 miles a month - some city some highway.

Cheapest insurance on the planet. Besides engine care, I drive reasonably without rabbit starts and stops, and I don't abuse good equipment. Four years after I bought the car, battery, alternator, serpentine belt, and other wear-n-tear items were replaced, and are going to be preplaced again in 2015. Every year I flush and winterize with new coolant.

Small things add up over time and prolong the investment. For me, I'm retired, I'll have this Cobalt for many more years without the need to invest in another car. Money spent now, for me anyway, at today's prices is better than a breakdown later on or even worse.

Doing things myself - nothing major, saves a retired person like myself, a lot of doe-ray-me later on.

I love preventative maintenance although I feel like changing an oil filter every 1500miles is a bit excessive.

You see your putting words in my mouth. I didn't say after 3000 mile oil changes into tar, what I said was "oil lose their viscosity and start to turn to tar after 3000 miles

I use to change my oil filter only when I changed my oil. Then one afternoon, I noticed my oil ring on my cartridge was not seated properly, Probably because I installed it wrong, being in a hurry or something like that.

The oil filter was only a month old, so while putting a new oil filter ring in, I also put a new filter in as well. Well, that month I drained the oil as usual, then replaced the oil filter - more out of habit, and I noticed the oil was not the usual dark color, but a deep caramel brown.

Just out of curiosity, I changed the oil filter the following month, but not the oil, and I noticed a quiet running engine and other things with the car's operation.

Oil filters are the life of a engine's lubrication system, as is the oil and other things. Instead of that blackish oil that comes out of the pan, I still get a deep caramel brown, no grit.

Would I recommend this for everybody - no.

For me anyway, it works. Cheap insurance and well worth the effort.

So at what point do they fully turn to tar? And at what point is the evidence that they begin turning to tar (which should be evident in a UOA correct)?

Based on my statment about 5,000 miles oil changes on conventional being just plain wrong apparently, I'd gather there would be evidence that could be sited in (numerous) UOAs that 5,000 miles is too long on conventionals so I'm curious to see that evidence.
