i have an 08 cobalt ls sedan. i need an oil change and i am considering doing it myself. i have done oil changes before just not in newer cars. i have a few questions, any help would be greatly appreciated.

1) Where is the oil filter and how hard is it to reach?
2) how do i reset the oil life gauge on my dash?
3) should i go with synthetic oil or regular oil?

there is a complete diy on this. its really easy to get to the oil filter. it is located on the right side of your tb.

to reset your oil life i believe you hold down both buttons until oil life reset comes up or something. idk i have to be in my car to tell you. refer to your manual.

personally i use synthetic. its not a must but it has been proven better over conventional oil. GM reccommends mobil 1

how do i reset the oil life gauge on my dash?

tells you in the manual BUT
i'm pretty sure you turn your car on but DON'T start the engine.. hold down the button you use to scroll through everything until reset oil or soemthing pops up then you press the arrow one/ the one on the right side and it should say something different..

then i'm pretty sure you are good to go.. sorry if its kinda confusing i would need to do atm it to explain better

and if you get it done at jiffy lube they prob won't reset it bc they are dumb

^ that sounds right.
The other thing you can do, i think it was dumb of GM to put this, is put your car in start and his the gas twice sort of quickly.
Actually it's supposed to be threes times -- key on, engine not running, hit gas pedal to the floor three times. That's on the 05s-07s -- I haven't done it on the 08-09 but I figure GM wouldn't change it. Or you can read the steps in the owner's manual on how to do it in the DIC with the buttons on your steering wheel.....

Oil filter is inside the black plastic cap on the side of the engine look to the right of the throttle body on the engine block...it has a 34mm hex top on it (1 1/4") and screws off lefty-loosey, righty-tighty...LoL! The filter is open so take it out slowly and use a rag/paper-towel to keep the engine clean. The filter snaps in to the cap with the pointy-end down. Put some oil on the o-ring on the pointy-end before installing the filter into the block.

Good luck!
