I let the original oil stay in 4000-5000 miles or 20% on your DIC (whichever comes first). Change oil and filter with regular oil meeting your Cobalt specs. This should allow for a full break in. Next change at above time miles above, (replace filter EVERY) use whatever oil you want that meets specs (regular/blend/full syn.) A lot will depend on your individual driving habits, but so many people change factory oil at 100, 500 or 1000 miles etc. and is just costing you unnecessary money and pouring out perfectly good oil that has many more useful miles, possibly hindering a long term full break-in, not to mention the environmental impact. Follow your owners manual and use good, common sense and good judgement.
Everyone will have their own opinion and you will hear many of them on this type post.

I use Mobil 1 and change it every 3000.
I do not go by the gauges.

I've got 2.2 also and I've ran regular oil in it, but I just switched over to full synthic, of course it also depends on how many miles you have on your car. In my case I drive 180 miles in one day, and I have over 96,000 miles also, so switching over to snythic is going to make a big difference for me since I have so many miles.

stupid comment but the DIC for the oil life is worthless, and not just on the cobalt the other cars I've owned I have tried to go by what that gauge says and its never worked for me. That's why I don't go on the gauge I go by miles/months whicever comes first and in my case its miles.

I just changed the oil in my 06 Cobalt 2.2L last week with conventional oil. I follow the 3 month/3000 mile pattern. From what I remember in shop class, synthetic oil doesn't break down as quickly as conventional oil. But since I change my oil regularly, I'd be wasting m money changing synthetic oil that often. Mostly, I don't like the idea of 7000 miles of engine wear coursing through my oil lines between synthetic oil changes.... just my opinion.
My friend has an 07 Cobalt 2.2L and he uses synthetic.

I agree, 7,000 is too long with any oil.
I change my oil every 3,000 miles.
I don't think it is a waste of money to use synthetic oil.

I lost torque when I went Syn. I put parts plus 5w 30 in and what a difference. Syn FTL. Thats my opinion though, I drive a 2.2 auto.

I use Valvoline SynPower and I love it. I just got some Royal Purple at work for like $5/qt so I couldn't pass that up. So I'm going to run that next time I change oil and see how I like it. I change my oil every 4k miles.
