What does the wheel gap look from outside the car? Those springs - at least visually from the pictures - look fine to me.

What size tires also. I have my rears on P225/50R17s and I’m almost in the fender. If I tow a little too much ,not for the car, but the tire size, the fender gauges my side wall a bit at speed bumps. I’m looking into a full rear end out of an HHR with beefier or adjustable rear shock. I mean this beauty is pushing 175k, her past life was one of the many trafficked car slaves able to finally buy freedom. 🧑‍🔧
I got it free from my grandpa when he passed away.

That's a big tire for the car - the stock 17" tire size was a 205/50R17. A 225/50R17 is 3.2% larger than that (as well as the same size larger than the 225/40R18 tire size for the SS's). If your car originally had 15s, that is 7% larger, and 4% larger if your car originally had 16s.
