I'm having a problem with my car surging and losing power and turning itself off. It seems any time I'm coming to a stop the car stalls out. There is no jerking or noise it just goes out. Also it seems to be jumpy and surges if I can get it to get going once I've stopped. It's worked that if I rev it up a little then downshift and keep the clutch in,rather than throwing it into neutral and coasting to stop, to keep it from stalling. I replaced all 4 plugs because it did seem to be missfiring.....the missfiring is solved but it still surges and stalls. The exhaust does seem to be backfiring occasionally too. I'm pretty sure it is the stock Cat witha Corsa Cat-back.I'm thinking maybe the cat is bad. A buddy of mine is ASE certified and thinks it could be too. I know the cat is warranteed to 80k miles.

Any ideas? If it is the cat....or what else it could be.

Oh yeah.....its a 2006 SS/SC

it sounds like it could be a problem with your MAF. did you mess with it when you changed your plugs?

well, first you shouldn't coast to stop lol, downshift properly... then I'd clean the MAF sensor and throttle... run some seafoam through the engine if you get a chance just for basic engine clean up

It was doing it before I changed the plugs.

Clean your MAF and throttle body.

I was having this problem, cleaned my MAF, half A$$ cleaned my throttle body and i was good for several weeks and it's starting to come back so I am going to take it all apart this weekend and clean the throttle body properly.

Thanks. I'll have to give that a try. Is it something you need to be really mechanically skilled to do? Or is it just unbolt a few parts and clean up and put back together?

i guess clean it. either the maf is getting dirty from a bad filter or it just crapped out. I've heard of this happening from time to time mostly on the le5. but i agree with everyone it most certainly sounds like a maf problem. can't be 100% sure til you check it out though. it's not too hard just undo the wheel well lining on the driver side via 7mm bolts along the bottom edge of the bumper. your airbox is in there along with the maf. just unbolt the 10mm intake brackets and free it up top with the hose clamp around the split in the intake. don't forget to unplug the maf harness so you don't yank out any wires

This happened to me, i would stall out when i stopped at red lights, or if i was parked and i revved my engine, the rpms would drop so low then i would stall out. You getting a Check engine light?

i got a CEL when i stalled. turned out to be a "failed eCM"

Dealship fixed it under warranty but it was a HUGE headache. took them 15 days to fix. Search my threads to find the thread i made about it.

Oh and te guy at the dealer said if it is the ECM that is faulty its covered under federal law so you wont have to pay for it.

So I took the car to Chevy.....turns out the Cat was bad. Would have been warranted except for the fact that it was not the stock Cat. I found out the car has long tube headers, high flow cat, all leading up to the Corsa Catback exhaust that I was aware of. They said that was causing the surging and power loss as well as the 4th cylinder missfiring. Gave me a quote of $1025 to put a stock SS exhaust back in the car....

Long story short, Bought Vibrant Header and high flow cat to hook up to the Corsa exhaust for 580.00 shipped. I also found out that my car has 60lb injectors and a smaller aftermarket pulley.

I'm still going to check the MAF and Throttle Body after I get the header and cat installed.

Anybody have any opinions about the Vibrant Header and Downpipe w/Cat?
