So I wasn't too positive on where to post this, so I thought here would work.

Lately after I've turned off my car and got out I smell this awful smell... Like stagnant creek water honestly and it seems to be coming from this:

The black.. thing? Sticking out. This is, embarrassingly, the first time I've ever noticed it for some reason.

What the hell is it and what's it's purpose? I feel like it's something totally obvious

well... i still don't know what it is. my battery recently died, i got a new one and haven't had the smell or steam/smoke coming out of it. so, somehow, i'm assuming my dying battery had something to do with it?

though i really don't know how, oh well.

That rubber thing is the battery vent. There is supposed to be a rubber hose that comes out of your battery and down thru the bottom of the trunk and it drains thru that rubber nipple thing. Make sure that line is still there and that it isn't clogged.

^ thankkk youu.. i thought i was never gonna have figured it out "for sure".

i was leaning towards it being something to do w/ the battery tho.

and i didn't notice any acid when i took the old battery it out. actually, honestly, i think that's the cleanest battery i've taken out of a car. ha.
