I noticed that some people dont really have the full understanding of what it means when one is told that their car may be running really rich or too lean. So i am going to post this thread so people can get a better understanding. Anyone that has accurate information on this topic please feel free to post. Feel free to include what causes both and how you can tell / what the signs are if your car is running either rich or lean.

Rich = too much fuel: wasting gas, odor of gas in exhaust -- may see black smoke in exhaust, poor performance, too much fuel can remove oil from cylinder walls and could lead to ring wear or cylinder wall scoring, poor idle.

Lean = too little fuel: creates excess heat, unusual exhaust odor, poor performance, poor idle.

Check your plugs, Not all that accurate though unless your running really lean or really rich.

Really rich = The plugs will be jet black and smell like gas
Really lean = Plugs will be bright white and have some heat spots from where it got really hot.

And if i remember correctly ideal is it will be like a light gray color and constant no weird marking or spots

Yes but running extremely rich can mess stuff up just as bad, It will wash the oil down your cylinder walls screwing everything up, but again thats only if its like so rich the car barley runs
