Just noticed this yesterday. My shifter on my 09 Cobalt LT(automatic) is stuck with the red indicator on R. I notice that there was other posts about it. So how do I go about fixing this myself if it is possible. It shifts properly, but just a cosmetic thing basically. So not sure if it's even worth messing around with?
No way I'm going to the dealer for a cosmetic issue and I'm out of my warranty anyhow.

I believe the other poster is still investigating. I hope he posts back and reports his findings. It's worth looking at it yourself, as it's a very simple mechanism. Pop off the trim and shifter plate and watch the range of movement to see where it's getting stuck. You don't need to worry about hurting anything.

Seemed the other posts had been closed. But maybe we'll hear something back. If anything I'll just leave it alone. It's really only cosmetic.

It's not rocket science. Little piece of plastic that follows lever in a plastic groove. Probably de-railed.

So how does one pull up the console area to get underneath. Definitely don't want to ding any of the plastic up in the process.

Engage your e-brake and pull up the trim piece around it. Then move your shifter to neutral and you will be able to lift up the trim around your center console. You'll need to disconnect at least your rear power adapter harness to move that trim to the side. While in neutral, shimmy the chrome bezel part of your shift knob down, exposing an allen screw. Loosen that and your shift knob can be lifted off, as well as the chrome bezel.

You should see the trim plate around your actual shifter. It has 4 tabs. Gently pull/pry outward to remove the top plate of the shifter. It might take a little bit of maneuvering, but once that's off everything you need to see will be exposed.

I'd upload a pic, but I am not able to do that until later. If you get stuck let me know and I'll find one.

I'll have to look into it this weekend. So you literally have to take apart the whole console area just to get at this?
Would your pic be any different than what Coby7 posted?

Mine is like this pretty much.
It's too bad, it can't be as simple as lifting up the panel where the shift indicator is and getting in there that way.

Mine was broken for 4 of the 5 years I owned my grand prix. I took it apart to fix it and I broke a plastic tab. Sometimes when its little things like this its better to leave it alone before you're left with a rattle or squeak

Honestly, it would probably take you 10 minutes (assuming you take a 5 minute break). These cars are just like playing with legos. 10 minutes of your time is cheaper than an hour of shop time, and you'll have the knowledge that it wasn't done by someone with sausage fingers.

Don't have anywhere to work on it inside. So probably gonna wait til warmer weather or a space frees up. Somehow messing with it by just seeing how to access the area. We got the red indicator to be stuck between R and N.
But definitely will pursue this more when the weather allows. Not doing anything now with this big storm in the Northeast.
