Hi, Newbie here
I just purchased a 2007 Cobalt basic model 4 door and the speedometer is not working and the car shifts real hard (automatic) in between gears and sometimes wants to stall when at a stop light so am assuming it has to do with the speedo not telling the computer what to do. When starting the car a message about the power steering displays until you press the info button to get back to the odometer. The check engine light is also on. otherwise the car performs just fine. Anybody have a clue what is going on here as I have not had a chance to take it to the dealer yet? I also understand that there is a recall for the power steering which also has not been done yet?
Thanks for any help

Welcome to the forum... You bought it doing all that? The power steering is a recall item. You need to take it to a dealer to get fixed for free.

The recall is "SAFETY RECALL NUMBER 10023"

In the mean time with these many problems I would suggest you unhook the battery for 15 - 30 minutes to reset it all, and she if she acts a little better.

If that does not help take it to Autozone or another autoparts store and get the code read. Write it down and post it on here for us to see...

Take it to the dealer ASAP, power steering unit is probably trashed (they are under recall). Could also be a speedo sensor, and since many sensors are tied to many other sytems, that could be it also.

You prolly do not want to just trust the seller. I would unhook the battery for awhile and allow it to reset, plug it back in and see if it comes on again, and if your speedo still does not work.

We have had several instances where unhooking the car for a few minutes has fixed issues.

You better have gotten that thing dirt cheap with all of those problems.

How mechanically inclined are you? Have you fixed alot of car things on your own before?

Yes I got it dirt cheap I think $4000 for a 2007 with 38,000 miles and the car also has a $1000 (or more) set of wheels and Maxxis tires. Yes I am mechanically inclined, just trying to find out what to do next, taking it to Autozone this am to have the obd checked and then over to Chevrolet to have the power steering recall done.

Good, Had to ask as sometimes I have seen people asking these questions on here who do not seem capable of turning on their tv on their own....

Did the warranty transfer? (I bought mine with 103K on it so I'm not sure on the warranty details, 06 with 103k paid $3k for it, it needed new tires and a throttle body).

First get the recall done right away.

The stall at stop light could also be a dirty MAF or Throttle Body.
Get the ODB codes checked, the hard shifting would worry me as it's putting extra stress on the transmission as long as there isn't already something wrong with the tranny.

Do you have the Hayne's or Chilton for it yet? I highly recommend having both, I often find things in one but not the other.

I took the car to Autozone and they scanned it and said it had two codes stored a PO700 (automatic trans fault, TCM & TCM has detected an emission related fault) and a dealer only code of UO0100 (could be a VO0100?) and they could not tell me what that one was and suggested it go to the dealer which is where it is at present. So much for the 400 code the seller said it had!

Never trust someone selling that new of a car with that many problems.

Let us know what the dealer says.

It sounds like you are going to have to get the dealer to diagnose, but you can still save dough by doing the repairs yourself. You should still have the 100,000 mile powertrain warranty, but the bumper to bumper was prolly only 36,000

You are correct on all counts!

Could someone post a pic for me? I need a closeup pic of the mount for the air cleaner on the farthest right side (looking at it from the front) where there is a gap next to the engine dust/shield cover. There is a bracket and a rubber washer and I am missing the bolt or pin or whatever goes there.
Thanks for any help

I too have the same problems, all of them. Our 2006 Cobalt LT was fine last night, and today it is having all the problems described in this post. Speedometer not working, check engine light on, "power steering" displayed on info screen, and shifts hard in to reverse. I popped the hood and the power steering unit was humming.

I called the local dealership after reading this thread, and there is a recall on the power steering unit. I don't see how that would affect how it shifts or the speedometer, but I'm hoping somehow they're tied in.

FYI - I was using the car to charge another battery earlier in the day. Maybe I fried something? Fuse?

Welcome to the forum. Yes, the power steering recall is "SAFETY RECALL NUMBER 10023" Def get that fixed before worrying about anything else. Be VERY careful getting to the dealership. Until fixed your power steering can fail at any time in that condition.

The power steering unit is inside under the dash. And as said earlier, every sensor on these cars are tied into at least two other systems so anything could be the issue. But more than likely the power steering motor.

Thanks for the quick replies! It's always nice to have a good forum with active users.

Update:

I took the car for a ride around the neighborhood, and the auto transmission never shifted from 1st gear. I speed up to about 30-35 mph and the rpms were at approx. 3300. Also, the trunk button inside the car would not work with the car "on", but when I turned it off and removed the key, it worked again. Think I'll take it to Autozone later and find out what, if any, codes are stored. I'll repost when I have them.

Dealer just called me and now states that the problem with the car is the PSCM (Power steering control module) which is attached to the steering column and they want $875 to repair it. I have placed a call to Chevrolet to see if they will pay for it as the car only has 39,000 miles on it, will see what they say as they are trying to contact the dealer. Supposedly the PSCM is not communicating with the rest of the car and is also stopping the speedo and the shifting as it is the weak link in the chain of the modules. The recall only replaces the electric motor itself is what I am being told. :amazed:
