My Chevy cobalt is an LS model 2006 with 135,000 miles. I am experiencing a strange heating and possible almost overheating issue. When I'm traveling at regular speed without too much stopping my car will maintain a temperature of around 180°. When I am in heavy stop and go traffic my cars temperature will climb to 223°, the thermostat will open and the fan will kick on, the temperature will decrease to around 210°, then will rise back to 223°. This process will repeat until I either get back to regular speed or turn the car off. In this sort of heavy traffic my temperature will not decrease back to 180°.

I have replaced the thermostat twice since owning the car. Right now the current thermostat is an aftermarket unit. I have flushed the coolant system many times and I replace the fluid once per year. I live in a very warm weather environment.

Additionally, the heater core went last year, and I bypassed that system with a hose. That hose doesn't show any deformation or wear and tear.

So, does anyone have any thoughts? Is this normal, abnormal, could it be a radiator, the hose i used to bypass the heater core, The radiator fan, or something else entirely? Thanks very much.

Normal is 89°C (192°F).

Here are the specifications.
The ECM commands Low Speed Fans ON under the following conditions:

• Engine coolant temperature (ECT) exceeds approximately 106°C (223°F).

• A/C refrigerant pressure exceeds 1 310 kPa (190 psi).

• After the vehicle is shut off, the ECT at key-off is greater than 140°C (284°F) and system voltage is more than 12 volts. The fans will stay on for approximately 3 minutes.

The ECM commands High Speed Fans ON under the following conditions:

• ECT reaches 110°C (230°F).

• A/C refrigerant pressure exceeds 1 655 kPa (240 psi).

• When certain DTCs set

Nothing in what you wrote makes me think there's anything wrong with your system. Car gets warmer in traffic as it should, fan comes on when it gets warmer as it should but fans won't cool it down to 192°F, I think they shut off at 203°F come back on at 223°F and if it hits 230°F then fan speed 2 kicks in.
