don't have time to search forum so my question is, should struts extend on their own when compressed by hand? This is without springs installed obviously

Could be any number of suspension components. I would check my swar bar bushings, control arm bushings, sway links, proper torque on components and go from there. It doesn't take much to make a lot of noise.

Glad to hear you fixed it, I recently fixed mine and went back to stock springs and it's so much better than the Eibach crap that was on there.
