I own a 2006 Chevy Cobalt SS & sad to say I don't take very good care of it
anyway my check engine light & TC light are both on I've taken it to several different places some people can't figure out whats wrong with it and some people say some off the wall stuff with outrageous prices on fixing it.
anyway this last guy tells me that I need a new timing chain and it's going to be about $800-$1,000 bux. and I am so tied of dealing with this that I am thinking about letting him do it. I just don't want to get ripped off.. anyone have any suggestions? is this a common problem? please help :sad2:

Did you get your check engine light codes read? Go to a auto parts store and get them read if you don't have the scan tool and report here what codes you get, then we can help further

why did he say you need a timing chain? is there slack or are the teeth ate up a bit? replace the tensioner before the chain, and if there's still slack, replace the chain. either way you probably need a tensioner

He said that 3 codes came up and he thinks it's the timing chain but he doesn't know until he takes my engine apart

But that would never turn on the TC light unless if the car is in limp mode maybe! Does your car still run Ok? What about your ABS light?

well sort of. it shifts hard at first I thought it was the transmission but I took it to a specialist and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. and no, no ABS light. but as soon as I get the codes I will post them.

Have you removed the TCM fuse and verified to see if it was physically good? If good re-insert 180 degrees back into its slot.

Do you get any warning messages with the TC light on?

I didn't have a check engine light, but my 08 SS did this recently with the traction control light always on. I couldn't turn it off, and it always gave me the warning message "service esc, esc off" when I started the car. Problem turned out to be the steering position sensor which just needed re-calibrated. They charged me for a half-hour of labor and that was it lol. Cost like $50 from the dealership.

Post the codes for the CEL though.

Good morning RudieGotSoul,

Were any of the locations you visited a GM dealership? If so and you wanted for me to check into this further with them, please let me know! I'm happy to assist however I can.
