Have to skip the pleasantries of the new members section guys. I'm glad you all take time out of your day to help all of these people and hopefully myself.

2006 Cobalt LS

2.2 lt

~126k miles

The problem:

ABS light on

TC light on

"power steering" shows where mileage etc. goes

little symbol of a car with a lock on it (power locks?)

shifting is very rough

car shudders when braking from ~15-0 mph

power steering works when it wants to (not often)

clicking coming from the shifter handle and the steering column


What I've attempted:

checked most of the grounds inside the engine area, seem to be fine

crudely grounded the module (TCM I guess) that everyone suggests doing

left the battery unhooked for 30 minutes

What worked:

grounding that module (ill admit it was a terrible job) worked for a day

leaving the battery unhooked worked for a few days

What I haven't tried:

checking wheel speed sensors

cleaning connectors for the modules



All in all, I bought this car a couple of weeks ago and I can't be happier with it. It's the funnest damn thing to drive when it works. I know something will fix all of this, I'ts just finding what works. Noticed a lot of other people with the same problem and I'm surprised a definitive fix hasn't been found. I'm definitely not a mechanic aside from changing my own oil and brakes so I apologize if I used terms incorrectly. This is my daily driver to and from work and I really don't feel like shelling out a bunch of quid for something that might not fix it like has happened to other people. Any input would be greatly appreciated :smiley-greet013:

Oh, sorry for the double post (don't ban me! :p) but I'm not certain if this car has had the recall parts put on it or not. Is there a painless way to find out if this car has had them installed or not?

I'm not a mechanic by any means, but I would check the fuses first. Usually a bad fuse can cause all kinds of problems. Im sure someone will jump in here and guide you to the fix soon.

I forgot to put that on the list. I randomly checked a few fuses but are there any specific ones that might set this off? I didn't check any under my steering column.

Honestly I really don't know. I'm not too familiar with this kind of stuff. There are fuses that when they go bad all kinds of weird stuff happens. Coby or someone else will probably reply tomorrow and let you know exactly what your problem(s) could be. I'll do some research and see if I can find any info for you

Have you checked for any codes? You can get that done at auto zone or any similar auto store

Remove and replace your ECM/TCM fuse in the BCM fuse block, you are losing GMLan communication between CPU's. It is fuse 25 top lefthand corner. It is probably corroded or pitted.

Sorry about the late reply guys. I went out, checked all of the fuses, and reseated them and the problem appears to have gone away. There was one or two that had a small amount of black on them so I changed those out. Everything has been working fine the past couple of days (knock on wood). Thank you guys for the help! :D

This one must have been one of the fuses with the black on it.

These fuses were originally designed for 12 Volt DC and this fuse has high speed GMLan running through it. Digital signals have square waves of alternating high and low currents with sharp edges. These tend to create spikes, which in turn creates high voltage causing the tabs and socket contacts to pit.

Only this fuse, on the "BCM", has digital going through it. It powers the GMLan tri-state buffer communication between the BCM and other computers. Other fuses may have some pitting also from motors starting and producing counter EMF like heater fan motor for example.

Well, the problems came back and in full force. I really would hate to take this car to a shop because im sure they wont fix it. Side note, key wont come out of the ignition now as well. Took the cover off my steering column to use that hidden button for the mean time. Also, it may just be coincidence but this only seems to happen when it rains or the humidity is really high.
