This happened last night. Started car engjne made tapping noise for a few seconds and engine light came on at same time. Drove to pick wife up 30 miles, ran fine. I think I was smelling oil like fumes though. Car ran fine. Could it be one of the solenoid s that control the valves?
Would a code check tell which one if that is the problem?

Drove it today, no tapping on startup. Does smell a little like crankcase fumes though.

How long has it been since the oil has been checked, or changed. These engines often times consume oil. Low oil level can cause low oil pressure. That can cause your timing chain to have problems on startup. Can also cause lifters to go flat since they need the oil pressure to work right. If you’ve got an oil leak this will mean you’ll need to check the oil often. I check my oil several times a month, and always before going for long drives. But then again I check tire pressure, coolant level, and brake fluid before going on drives and do so fairly often since I don’t want to accidentally damage the car.
