'07 Cobalt LS, 70K miles

... which has what I suspect is chain noise: 'tinkling' after a cold start, that goes away after about a minute. (It also has a bad water pump, which is noisy with a listening stick. But, the water pump noise doesn't sound like the 'tinkling', IMO.)

Thoughts:
1. If the 'tinkling' is chain noise, the fact that it goes away after warm-up makes me think it could be a tensioner.
2. It looks like the timing chain tensioner would be a lot easier to change than the balance shaft chain one [1].
3. So, I'm thinking to just replace the timing chain tensioner and see what happens.

Question: Is this just a bad idea?
... or any other thoughts on the matter.

Hi, I've replaced my timing chain and balance shaft chain twice. I would recommend just doing the whole job. It's a time consuming but you most likely have a broken guide in there. The guides are plastic and if not already broken, one soon will be.
