Hey guys i'm a big fan of weight reduction in cars. It's really a great way to make your car go faster. I've taken out my back seats and trunk floor and side carpet, and just any extra junk i dont need. I was wondering out of all the guys out there who are gutting their cobalts, what is the lightest cobalt ls or ss that there is record of?

i don't think this is something many people do unless they race their cars. keep in mind that a typical weight to hp ratio is 100lbs gives you around 10hp give or take. you MIGHT be able to snag 50-75 pounds or so if you gut the whole interior out to just the driver seat

wellllllllllllllllll i happen to race my friends and the occasional doosh bag. I remember i raced my friend with an integra. lost. went and took all loose items out. my donut, jack, back seat, and trunk carpet. then we raced again the next day and i beat him by quite a bit. Why anyone would mod out their engine to go fast unless they want to go fast or race?? haha I think the main reason people don't do any weight reduction is because they have no idea how helpful it is for acceleration.

people know that it helps, that's a no brainer. it's the convenience factor that nobody does it. you never know what's going to happen on the road. where if you blow your tire, you're kinda ****ed. and also, lets say a couple friends wanna hang out but you're the only one with gas in your car, you're driving. but oh hey, no back seats, sorry guys. and people mod their engines because they want to learn about their car and make it better than stock. technically taking out parts of your car does not add horsepower, it just makes it lighter so the engine isn't stressing as much to get to a higher RPM. everyone knows what it does, but building your engine to go faster is a lot more respectable than taking out the back seats and your spare tire kit. just sayin.

The back seat is almost all foam anyway, so no real weight loss there. The only real weight loss is removing the spare and jack, and not having a huge stereo, speaker boxes alone add at least 50-100 pounds empty.

yes, but then there's plywood (or something hard) to make it hard on the trunk back, and the black stick that it pivots on weighs quite a bit for just a metal stick.

now you got a point there ;)
.... but watching someone throw 800 dollars into their engine, only for you to take out ur seats and still beat them = priceless :p

as long as you're not boosted, with no extra mods, i would beat you. just sayin.

not trying to get my internet ego up here, but i have quite a bit of money into my car (imo) and i know for a fact i could beat a stock motor with just a little weight reduction. you MIGHT get me off the line, but i would catch up really fast.

Exactly, that is why is did not buy another GM car when I got our new vehicle. I really like the comfort of having a spare as opposed to the flat tire(plug) repair kit and bottle of slime in the trunk. A plug kit just does nothing when the sidewall completely blows out.

Strip out you WHOLE interior, dash too, take your hood and doors off. bet I still come out ontop haha.

If I did not use my cobalt often and wanted it to look ugly on the inside I would do it but there is no point. I like having my interior all there, if I was to to race it legally and only use it for that purpose I would strip it than.

I actually wasn't talking about you wankerbalt ;). talking about the aforementioned friend with a 98 integra. we both got our cars around the same time. we raced and we were pretty much even. then he went and threw $800 into his car, all i did was gut it from the front seats back and i smashed his crap lol.

I like my interior too! but i mean, i don't really look back there that often. and i drive the balt mostly at night anyways. my interior is real clean looking forward haha. you can see my interior in the "post your interior" thread.

beating his eagle talon by a couple car lengths with pretty much the same mods
I got beat by one car length by 80 from a dig by an awd 2.0 turbo, tuned talon.

felt pretty good about myself! lol

well, do what you want. but don't think you're gonna beat every inline 4 or many (if any) v6's out there just because you took out a small portion of weight.

i've beaten v6 stangs and firebirds. and i've beaten b20's, h22's, 280z's, 240's, latest gen civic si's. hell i've even beat a mazdaspeed3 (2.3t) because he was a bad driver. only car i've raced that totally kicked my crap to the curb was a g35 with a new tb, full nismo exhaust with a tune. I didn't wanna race him, he asked me! lol i was like "uhhh. ok man".

Ok i'm done defending myself. My car is slow, I know. I have exhaust and intake and i've lost about 250 or more off the curb weight with lighter rims, and gutting the rear. I can run 0-60 in about 6.9-7 seconds with my 4 speed auto. haven't taken it to the track yet but it's probably in the 14's. <--- this. is. slow.

I never ment to talk trash about anyone's car! lol everybody calm down lol

did you weight all that? Not a bad weight loss, I wanted to delete my rear seat but thats about it just havent because I want to make it look "clean" and not like I just took my rear seat out, even though its not much weight to begin with, I just never use my rear. Barely use my passenger seat either, if I am taking people out I am usually using the XJ-R.

And relax man, no one is going after you, put down the gun and stand down on defense

hmm...this is very similar to the build I'm looking at doing....but 60WHP...are you SURE about that? seems rly doubtful with only bolt-ons and tune. i also have fe5 suspension and some good springs, it definitely makes a HUGE difference in handling.

I'm looking to add about 30WHP (or more if possible but doubtful), my future mod list so far is 2.4 HO intake manifold, Injen CAI, GMPP performance exhaust, better header, ZZP 2.5 catted downpipe and a trifecta tune (also possibly the 2.4 throttle body if it rly does make a difference)

also, in terms of weight reduction, it's a question of functionality and luxury. For the amount of time I spend in my car (over an hour a day), I want that heave sound system in my trune (2 amps and 2 12's) and I don't wanna be caught without spare tire, and definitely not removing rear seats because you never know when you'll need em, at least in my case.
